Ask the Editors Day at Marvel
I’ve got a special surprise for you. Since BSI Comics is part of the Marvel Retailer Resource Center, we’ve been given a special opportunity to post questions to Vice President – Executive Editors Tom Brevoort and Axel Alonso. On Thursday 3/11/2010 from 8am to 5pm we will be able to post your questions and have them answered. Throughout the day on Thursday we’ll update this article with your questions and the answers. So, if you have a question for them, keep it clean, then either leave your question as a response to this post or use our contact form. Be sure to let us know if you want to take credit for the question. Otherwise we will list your question as coming from the Masked BSI Avenger.
Here are the questions and answers to all of the questions asked:
- Any chance of a proper New Warriors book under Fabian Niceiza? I’ve been pretty tired of writers abusing the name and roster of one of my favorite books over the last few years.
Marvel: There’s always the possibility of more NEW WARRIORS stuff–many of the characters have been appearing in AVENGERS: THE INITIATIVE for the last few months. I do think it’s unlikely that we’d go back to Fabian for it, though. Putting aside whether he’d be at all interested, all evidence has shown me that trying to recreate the classic comics of the past is a sucker’s game. It’s damned unlikely that you’re going to be able to recreate that magical moment in someone’s life when they first encountered a particular series. To give you two concrete examples, I think it hurt Peter David’s legend and his standing to do more HULK after so many years, and I think it hurt Mark Waid’s legend and standing to return to CAPTAIN AMERICA. Sometimes, those runs are about that perfect moment and the zeitgeist at that time as much as they are about the work, and nostalgia is a difficult factor to overcome. I’d rather focus on trying to craft the classic runs of tomorrow.
- When is Marcos Martin going to get a regular, high profile job- say something like Avengers?
Marvel: Marcos is terrific, but he’s not really fast enough to do a monthly and maintain the quality of his work to the level that he prefers. So for the time being, he’s going to remain within the mix on AMAZING SPIDER-MAN–his style and approach really seems to click on that character.
- Dark Pet Avengers. C’mon! That would sell! Wouldn’t it?
Marvel: This gets the coveted “Dogpool Seal of Approval.”
- Just noticed an ad that says a new issue of JMS’s The Twelve will be coming soon. Does soon have a vague month in mind?
Marvel: I don’t want to give you a vague month, because if I do, you’ll just become upset if we don’t hit it. Rather, we’re going to do what another retailer was advocating earlier, and wait until we’ve got all of the scripts in hand before we solicit the remainder of the project. But Chris Weston is almost finished with #9 now.
- What are your plans for Nextwave: Agents of H.A.T.E?
Marvel: If all goes the way we’re thinking now, they’ll be showing up in a major way in a major title before the end of the year.
- Are we ever going to see Marvel Team-Up again?
Marvel: Probably not in its classic form. We’ve tried it a couple of times, and it never seems to get the necessary traction. It was a much easier sell in the days before the Direct Market, when it would just ship to newsstands and was a strong impulse buy. It’s more likely that we’ll do more things like SPIDER-MAN/WOLVERINE.
- Are we gonna see some Disney/Marvel crossovers? Like the Marvel Super Squad interacting with the Disney’s Ultra Heroes?
Marvel: That’s not impossible, but we’re not quite at that point in the process yet, and many of the key Disney properties have already been licensed for comics to other publishers. So until those contracts end, there isn’t too much that we can do with those particular characters.
- Why is Spidey 3x a month, especially in this economy?
Marvel: Because 3X a month works better for this character and the kind of soap-opera storytelling that’s his bread-and-butter than having three unconnected monthly titles does.
- Deadpool? Is there such a thing as too much?
Marvel: Eventually, maybe, but not so far. This is a common question that gets asked, and the reality is that the audience really determines what is successful and what isn’t. In this case, at least so far, all of those assorted Deadpool projects have been selling well, so we continue to do more of them. When that ceases to be the case, then we’ll inevitably scale back.
- People want to know what’s up with Miracleman. Any announcements on the horizon?
Marvel: Nothing that we’re ready to talk about yet, sorry. We want to make certain that we do this right, and that’s going to take an appropriate amount of prep time. And it’s Marvelman.
- Why is Dr. Doom showing up all over the Marvel Universe at the same time?
-He’s in Latveria in Thor.
-He’s in Wakanda in Doomwar.
-He’s been kidnapped by the Intelligentsia in the Hulk books.
Aren’t all of the above books taking place at approximately the same time? Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been enjoying all of the above books, but isn’t the Marvel Universe supposed to be somewhat cohesive?Marvel: He’s showing up everywhere because he’s a popular villain that fans love to read about and creators love to use, and he’d been off the table for awhile while Millar did his thing in FF. Marvel books have never all taken place at around the same time, not really—not in a world where Spider-Man’s had up to four regular titles, and Wolverine’s appearing in half a dozen books regularly.
The THOR appearance is pre-SIEGE, the DOOMWAR and HULK appearances after that.
