Even though we haven’t seen any early reviews of this weekends Star Wars Clone Wars movie, Lucas doesn’t have the greatest track record in our recent memory. Rest assured that this video clip of Boba Fett doing a Flash Dance like routine will not disappoint.
We’ve talked Star Wars here before, way back in Episode 19, but with a new movie coming out, the Showcase boys decide to once again journey to a galaxy far, far away. This week, the guys discuss all six Star Wars movies, why Chase hates the Expanded Universe, how he ruined Vector Prime for Blake, who for some reason became friends with him anyway, the current comics from Dark Horse, the property in video games, and of course, the upcoming Clone Wars movie and TV show! In the picks this week, Chase gives props to Daredevil #109, and Blake chuckles over Ambush Bug: Year None #1! Because YOU demanded it! We got so many requests after our Valiant Comics retrospective, that we simply had to delve into another lost universe of the 90s, the Malibu Comics Ultraverse! The Showcase boys talk about their favorite Ultraverse titles and stories, what made the Ultraverse such an innovative experiment, and how the line of comics died out. And with Chase still absent from the comic shop, Blake doubles up on his picks of the week: Final Crisis: Rogues’ Revenge #1 and Hack/Slash Annual #1. I know that I told most of you that I wasn’t going to Comic-Con on Saturday because it’s just too crowded, but I just couldn’t help myself. More later. Until then enjoy some pics of day three.
Well, there’s not much happening at Comic-Con this year since there’s hardly anyone here. Just kidding! Holy crap is it crowded. I’m sure once it’s all said and done the attendance will break all records. We spent all of the day wandering the floor like drooling fan boy zombies. We’ll have more pics and videos up tonight along with news from panels. Until then here are a few of the things we saw yesterday.
Hulk mad at large number of people dressed up as Batman and Joker. Also, doesn’t it look like the Hulk is clenching his My Little Pony swag in his left hand?
Alas, even Lego couldn’t stop Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull from sucking.
I was going to shoplift at this local boutique, but then I saw this sign. I’m not sure if the Spirit is protecting this city until Chrismas 2008 or starting with Christmas 2008. Either way I won’t take the chance.
Due to the 4th of July holiday last Friday, new books will arrive on Thursday instead of Wednesday this week. Therefore, our hours on Wednesday will be 10am-6pm and we will open Thursday from Noon-8pm.
Detective Comics was published July 1939, was written by Gardner Fox and illustrated by Bob Kane. In his third appearance we see some characteristics that define Batman into the modern age. This is also the first issue that is not written as a generic crime story, and instead we are presented with a somewhat super villain, Dr. Death.
The story:
Dr. Death has developed a deadly pollen that he presumably will use to threaten the world. However, he recognizes the growing threat against crime, Batman, and puts a classified ad in the local paper (something like SWM evil scientist plans to kill, let’s see if you can stop me) to entice Batman into a trap. Batman accepts the challenge and is caught in a trap by two of Dr. Death’s henchmen. Batman escapes with a gunshot wound to the shoulder and eventually follows Dr. Death’s servant, Jabah, to his lab. During his confrontation Dr. Death is presumed dead after a fire breaks out in his lab.
Batman Firsts:
During his confrontation with Dr. Death’s henchmen, Batman picks up a fallen gun and threatens to kill them if they don’t reveal their bosses identity. This is somewhat of a mystery to modern Batman fans since it is well known that he doesn’t use guns. This is also the first time we see Batman use gadgets, giant suction cups that allow him to scale the outside of a building and a mace like glass capsule used to fend off Jabah. Dr. Death is considered by most to be Batman’s first “super villain” and is also the first to refer to him as Batman.
Overall, this story flows much better than the first two appearances of Batman partly due to an extended number of pages for the story and it’s departure from a simple criminal story. Stay tuned for tomorrow’s review because we may not have seen the last of Dr. Death.
It’s the episode Blake and Chase have been hoping to record for over ten years now! (That’s right. Even before podcasting existed.) The Valiant Universe — home of heroes such as Harbinger, X-O Manowar, Archer and Armstrong and Rai and the Future Force — is slowly making a return with new hardcover editions, and the promise of new comics to come. This week, the guys tell you their favorite Valiant stories, cross their fingers for the return for Magnus: Robot Fighter and Solar: Man of the Atom to the line, and explain how they would resurrect Valiant as a line of ongoing comics. In the picks this week, Blake cheers for the return of Firebreather and Chase is still in love with Green Lantern: Secret Origin. In the next two weeks we’re going to talk Wanted and Mark Millar, then an episode focusing on our favorite Webcomics, so e-mail us with your comments, “Ask Chase Anything” questions, or anything else at Showcase@comixtreme.com! And if you’ve got a Webcomic suggestion, be sure to include the URL!
